Going the Distance
September 9, 2010Gosh, the romantic comedy is hard to do. Well, the romantic comedy is hard to do well. That's an important caveat. There are all of the normal trope and cliché pitfalls that it is so easy for professional writers to fall into--when writing becomes work with a schedule shortcuts tend to look much better--but they tend to be much more seductive in the romantic comedy with its implicit promise of fluff and sentimental ease.
Machete
September 9, 2010It's taken 15 years and umpteen billion supporting tough guy roles, but Robert Rodriguez has finally managed to make a major studio film starring Danny Trejo.
The American
September 9, 2010Corbijn's sophomore effort is gorgeously shot with plenty of beautiful scenery to gush over, but otherwise, the results are mostly dull and disjointed, more "boredom-inducing" than "Bourne."
The Last Exorcism
September 9, 2010"The Last Exorcism" is creepy, disturbing fun... and very surprising in the way it handles the subject matter differently than how it's been handled in the past.
Lottery Ticket
September 9, 2010The filmmakers seemed to be aiming for something light and airy that would be gone as soon as you left the theater, and they got exactly that.
Nanny McPhee Returns
September 9, 2010For any problems it has, "Nanny McPhee Returns" is enjoyable for a lot longer than it's not, filled with class and charm that a lot of other children's films reject as unpalatable. And when you're talking about a film that spends a lot of time talking about animal droppings, that's saying something.
The Switch
September 9, 2010It's not horrible and it has the sense to make the most of Bateman's talents, but it's awfully hard to relate to people who can't figure out Clark Kent is Superman wearing glasses.
Eat Pray Love
September 9, 2010Like a 2 1/2 hour infomercial about sharing your feelings that replaces any true emotions with some of the most ridiculous and useless spiritual rhetoric you're ever likely to hear.
The Expendables
September 9, 2010"The Expendables" is mainly an exercise in nostalgia and action movie wish fulfillment. And violence. A lot of violence. If you are of the right age, or are a connoisseur of the Steven Seagal flavor of direct-to-DVD action film, seeing all these guys up on screen actually is a lot of fun. It doesn't make it a good movie by any stretch of the imagination, but it's still a lot of fun.
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World
September 9, 2010"Scott Pilgrim" is another genius turn in Wright's career and filmography, made even more impressive by how impossible this task must have seemed from the offset. It's destined to become a beloved classic among the under-30 ADD generation whose lives have been intrinsically linked to MTV and video games. And who knows? Possibly even a few open-minded older folks as well.
